God trusts us
We Christians are often told, rightly, that we need to trust God. It’s a message that needs to be reiterated. Faith is frequently celebrated, but we should honour trust more. If you’re trusting God through difficult times right now, hanging on even though you have many unanswered questions, may you be encouraged as you trust.
But let’s see, too, that God trusts us. When Jesus ascended to heaven after the resurrection, He entrusted the most important message in history – the good news of the gospel – to His unpredictable and fragile disciples. The initial spokesperson for the initiative was the impetuous Peter, known for his fireside betrayal of Christ. But not only were they called to believe in Jesus, but He believed in them – and He believes in us. Judas had been appointed as the treasurer for Jesus’ team, a decision made by Jesus Himself. Judas was crooked, and was pilfering the funds, which was why he was incensed when Mary used perfume worth an enormous amount – the equivalent of a year’s income for the average person – and anointed Jesus with it. Judas protested about waste, and made a pious speech about poverty, which the other disciples had sympathy with. But lurking beneath the high-sounding words was greed. Judas had betrayed Jesus’ trust long before he ever met with the religious authorities or proffered a kiss in Gethsemane. Jesus trusts us. Let’s not let Him down.
